Mountains to Sea Wellington

Maureen Hickey

Maude grew up in Gore, Southland and despite spending the first 17 years about as far from the sea as you can get in New Zealand, she’s always loved the ocean. While that started with simply enjoying the benefits of connecting with nature through swimming, a few (failed) attempts at surfing and some snorkelling, over time she also become more and more interested in the health of our waterways.

She studied and worked in research at Otago University before moving to Wellington and becoming a public servant working in various roles in historical Treaty settlement negotiations – including, for the last 10 years, leading teams working with hapū and iwi in Te Tai Tokerau.

When she got the opportunity to join the MTSW Board in 2018 she jumped at it – she knew the team was doing great work in marine and freshwater education with schools and communities and she wanted to support that – she would have loved action-focussed programmes like these when she was at school too. Maude often supports community events, and every time she sees how the opportunities inspire students or bring about outcomes of a freshwater project. She knows it’s making a difference

As Chair of the Trust she’s inspired by the passionate team and supportive volunteers and funders. Maude brings a steady and dedicated lead to our team helping MTSW to grow good works across the region.
