A Guide to Monitoring Wellington’s Freshwater Fish

These resources have been designed to help community groups and individuals monitor native freshwater fishes in their local streams and rivers. Thanks to Stella McQueen for her content, photos and expertise.   You can also follow her excellent facebook page: New Zealand Native Fish to help extend your knowledge.

Why monitor native fish?
Many of our native freshwater fish species are in decline and the main cause of this unhappy statistic is the degradation of freshwater environments and the loss of important habitats. However, fish can also be one of the first things to return to a restoration site and so can provide a great way to track positive outcomes from your efforts.

These resources have been funded through the Whitebait Connection Project. They can be downloaded in full below or high resolution copies for printing can also be requested by contacting freshwater@mtsw.org.nz.
